Problem Statement - Research, conceptualize, and develop a product that is an artifact for the home
Smart Home
I began by examining the current landscape of most popular products for the home. I specifically looked at smart home devices and their functions... My insights were that most of them encourage the use of phones and have a similar white futuristic appearance.
I chose to instead focus on analog devices that would limit the use of phones in the home for social, productivity, and health reasons.
AI Exploration
I chose to explore forms using AI that are more colorful and more abstractly shaped than the current smart home products. From here, I extracted a theme of geometric shapes and an invitation to interact
Sketch Exploration
Taking these criteria, I sketched out various interaction concepts that would involve the phone and go in different areas of the home. For more successful concepts, I continued to refine the form before generating foam core models to check scale and interaction
Cad Exploration
From foam, I proceeded to model the pieces in order to nail down their aesthetic. I also applied various grid proportions to the more-ready models in order to make them look balanced.

The final set of products draws on established rituals and alludes to objects from the past that evoke feelings of nostalgia and encourage user engagement
The Candle
The candle allows users to utilize their phone's flashlight to light up the dinner table and have a conversation. It is based on the existing ritual of putting the phone face down on the table. An NFC is used to trigger the command on the phone to turn on the flashlight and a dial can be turned at the base of the shade to adjust the warmth.
The Toaster
The second product resembles a toaster that helps users enhance productivity based on the Pomodoro principle. When working at their desk, the user can insert the phone and set a time to work without distractions.
The Wall Phone
The wall phone is meant to help reduce blue light exposure before bedtime. By mounting it to a wall, the user can use its magsafe charging capabilities to power up their phone overnight, as well as hear their alarm louder with the help of the analog amplifier.
Packaging
As part of the project, I also developed packaging proposals which are meant to imitate a funky and vintage style.
